Final Project

In media class, we actually don't have an exam (you're welcome) but that means we have a major project to complete. We are actually going to start it now as it is going to take some time to finish. Here are the basics:

1. You are going to be working in a group of 4 people to create a 35 minute presentation that includes a video that you will be giving to grade 7-8 students from our feeder schools.

2. You may choose your topic, but it must be related to digital citizenship, social media, social networking, positive digital footprints, being safe online, how to avoid online predators, Facebook, Youtube, excessive gaming, or any other topic you can brainstorm that is related to these topics.

3. The idea here is to help our younger generations navigate the web effectively so that they will have a positive interaction with others as well as leave a good digital footprint.

4. In your group, every person does not have to be a presenter. I would recommend that you work together as a team to come up with jobs that suit your individual strengths. For example, you might have someone in your group who is a really strong researcher or someone who is really good with editing video or someone who loves to work with kids. So in your groups, think about each person's individual strengths and come up with an effective working group.

Things to Keep in Mind!

a) Powerpoint presentations are not effective for engaging young students. You should use something like Google Docs to organize your ideas so that you have an order for your presentation, but if it's a powerpoint, your mark is going to be poor.

-> something to consider is using only pictures or visuals on your slide to organize your presentation and keep you on track

b) Grades 7-8 students like to talk and they especially like to talk to high school students so engage them in some kind of interactive discussion/game so that they can feel like they are a part of the presentation.

c) You should have some kind of an ice breaker activity to begin your presentation. This should get the kids up out of their seats and allow you to interact with them so they get comfortable with you being in their classroom.

d) You might want to have some kind of gimmick or someone dressed up - Ninjas, superheroes, etc.

e) The idea here is to entertain them as well as educate them.

f) You should have all your research documented (you might want to use a social bookmarking site like Diigo) so that I may access and look at where you have gotten your information.

g) You are going to be required to keep some sort of a production journal/log book (you may do this on the Ning or wiki) where you document your progress.

h) You also need to 'storyboard' your video before you will be allowed to film and edit. Your plans for the videos will be shared with Ms. Weir, Miss Johns and a few other teachers so that we may help you to be/stay on track.

i) You will want to check out the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board's Getting Along Digitally website as this is where the idea for your project originates. You may wish to look at their videos and themes, but please come up with your own ideas. I have watched their videos and won't be very happy if I see you have basically copied another school's video.
